The old Tolstoy line about the diverse, intricate nature of unhappy families takes on a fresh resonance in this exacting little drama, played out in a cramped Rome apartment that buzzes with all manner of domestic squalls. Full credit to Kim Rossi Stuart, who co-writes, directs and stars as the tale's chippy, combustible dad, raging against a wayward wife who "comes and goes" while frantically attempting to mould his sad-eyed son (Alessandro Morace) into a swimming champ. He paints a confident portrait of everyday strife, full of telling details that must surely have been culled from real life. And if the ending finally feels a trifle fudged and unresolved, hey, that's family relationships for you.
